Missing the Bus
Ever get something almost finished but feel it isn’t right? That’s what happened to me yesterday. I’d been writing this week’s message but wasn’t happy with it. I couldn’t put my finger on what the issue was but I just knew it wasn’t right.
Then the phone rang. It was my son’s school ringing to tell me he’d missed the bus. In over three years, my son has only missed the bus once, so this was out of the ordinary.
While I was driving to school to pick him up, I looked back at the message I was writing and the message the Universe had just sent me.
The penny dropped! The message I was writing about was not relevant. I had missed the bus.
You see, I was writing about someone else’s interpretation of a message and how I believed they had misinterpreted the message. I didn’t point out the alternative interpretation to him at the time, but was happy to be critical of his interpretation in my message of the week. I was also feeling smug about my ‘correct’ interpretation.
There was lots of spiritual ego in my message until the Universe sent me off to pick up my son and re-think my message for this week.
So I’ll now throw it out to you all. If you see what you perceive as spiritual ego in anything that you read or hear on my website, drop me an email and let me know. That way I’ll have lots more teachers helping me on my journey.
It’s important that we are humble enough to accept constructive criticism from those around us. Once we analyse this criticism we can choose to either accept or reject it. However, the analysis process can be a wonderful aid to spiritual growth.
When is it Ego?
I’ve read Derek’s article on ego and listened to the audio. But I’m still a bit confused. Last week my wife snapped at me when I asked her a question. I couldn’t understand what her problem was so I snapped back. We were cranky with each other for most of the day. Then the next morning she seemed fine and everyone was happy. Am I coming from ego and, if so, why?
Derek’s response
You may not want to hear this but – yes – you are coming from ego.
Your ego couldn’t see any reason why your wife should snap at you and so, based on past experiences, decided you shouldn’t have to take this treatment and snapped back. This caused your wife’s ego to respond by with drawing for a period of time. Because she withdrew, your ego didn’t want to get snapped at again, so it withdrew. And so the cycle continued until your wife’s ego decided to let go of the issue as it had no further interest in it. Your ego then felt safe responding to her with the expectation that you wouldn’t be snapped at again.
So what’s the alternative?
In my journal classes, I teach a series of strategies for dealing with situations like this. The issue of immediate importance is not to respond to your wife in the same way as she was acting.
