Taboo Dreams
Ever had a dream that made you feel embarrassed. Like the nude ones we all have but much worse. So bad that you think to yourself, “I can’t tell anyone about this.”
Well I had just such a dream the other night. And no, I’m not going to share the details – too embarrassing!
But it made me really question the meaning of the dream. After some mulling over, I came up with what I thought was a reasonable interpretation.
I’d been writing about ego for the website as well as looking at my own ego issues. The dream seemed to be letting me know that my ego was still very dominant in everything I do.
I wasn’t 100% happy with my interpretation, so I decided to have a look at a reference dream book I use, “The Power of Dreaming” by D. Jason Cooper. I flicked through the index, not really expecting to find anything about my dream, given its content. Then I came across a section on taboos.
The nature of my dream is certainly taboo in our society and it got a mention in Jason’s list of taboos. And Jason’s explanation certainly hit the nail on the head for me. As I explain in my dream interpretation article, there was an aha factor for me in Jason’s interpretation that I hadn’t felt with my own interpretation.
To quote:
Taboos are essentially social, so when we dream about taboos we are essentially dreaming about the social injunction (“don’t do that”) rather than the action itself. ….. Can be a warning that the dreamer must not seek the divine in the conventional. The path of the spirit is not the common path, and to follow it often requires breaking social convention.
With what had been happening for me during the past week or two, I could really relate to the above explanation. If I’m going to break the hold my ego has over me, I’m going to have to respond in unconventional ways.
Featured Articles and Resources
I’ve found Jason’s book below is an excellent resource for interpreting dreams. What I particularly like about Jason’s book is that he keeps the explanations open ended. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere dream interpretation is not an exact science. Jason offers several suggestions for each issue so that you are able to examine your current situation and identify the explanation that best suits and leads to the aha factor. If you’re looking for a dream interpretation book I would strongly recommend this one.

I found this book to be an excellent guide to understanding the dream process. It is the first book on this topic that I have read and I found its contents regarding "dream logic" very clear and easy to understand. The book also contains a dictionary of objects, events, and places. While this section is not as large as other dream dictionaries it does capture the essential terms and meanings found in most dreams. karen (Cranston,Rhode Island)
